WHAT OUR PATIENTS ARE SAYING

John Miller
September 29, 2021.
Have been treated by two therapists (Becca and Brenna) for back muscle spasms. They are both very competent, excellent "bed side manner", professionalism and skill. Their therapy and advice is improving my quality of life. Would actively seek treatment from them again if/when necessary.

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a skilled treatment where fine needles are inserted into muscle, tendons, and/or ligaments to treat pain, release trigger points and stimulate a healing response.  Dry needling can be an effective treatment for many neuromusculoskeletal pain symptoms that can lead to improved movement, range of motion, and activity tolerance. The process is termed “dry” needling as there is nothing injected into the body but rather the process of inserting the needle into the body tissues creates the treatment effect.

Is it the same as acupuncture?

No.

  • Acupuncture is an Eastern Medicine treatment:

    • Needles go just under the surface of the skin (not the muscle)
    • The goal:
      • Improve the “Qi” or energy flow.
    • Uses meridian lines as its guide for treatment.
  • Dry needling:

    • A modern, science and research-based treatment.
    • Needles are placed in localized trigger points.
    • The goal:
      •  restore function and mobility to muscle tissue.

Here are just a few conditions that can benefit from dry needling:

  • Acute and chronic neck pain

  • Headache

  • Shoulder impingement

  • Tennis elbow

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Knee pain

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Low back pain

Is dry needling safe?

  • Yes! Research has shown that dry needling is safe, effective, and minimally invasive. It is performed by trained and certified physical therapists.

  • Your physical therapist also uses professional and educational judgements and screening to ensure a patient is appropriate for the treatment.

Does my insurance cover dry needling?

Each insurance policy is different in coverage for dry needling. Your physical therapist and office staff can assist you in determining what your insurance covers. Our clinic charges $10 each visit that includes dry needling, in order to cover the cost of supplies.

Where is dry needling offered?

Select Therapy offers dry needling at all five clinics.

Feel free to call our office for more information or to answer any questions specific to your needs.
