Dizziness and balance impairments can pose safety concerns due to increased fall risk. There are many causes of dizziness including BPPVvestibular hypofunction, orthostatic hypotension, and medication side effects. Physical therapists are trained in evaluation and treatment of dizziness and balance disorders with treatments ranging from balance exercises to Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex (VOR) training and strengthening exercises.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a common cause of Vertigo. Symptoms often occur with changes in head position such as looking up or down or changing positions in bed. Vertigo symptoms are often described as room-spinning dizziness that lasts less than one minute. Symptoms are typically brief and can vary in level of intensity. Physical therapists are trained in evaluation and treatment of BPPV with canalith repositioning maneuvers.

BPPV Symptoms:

  • Dizziness
  • Sensation that you or the room is spinning
  • Loss of balance, instability
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
